Dan Burridge ran the London Marathon for us in 2015 and this year decided to take on a new challenge, competing in the gruelling 100km Ultra Challenge along the South Coast.

Fraser Millar took part in the London Triathlon in August to raise money for Lungs for Living. Fraser is a respiratory academic clinic fellow and did his research block with Lungs for Living, which is why he wanted to raise funds to support the department.

Louise Williams and Gareth Perry took part in the British 10k London Run in July to raise funds for Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Syndrome (MRKH). The money they raised helped to pay for an open day for friends and family of MRKH patients. MRKH is a disorder that occurs in women and mainly affects the reproductive system. It affects around 1 in 5,000 women.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters the Young Person's Unit (YPU) is thriving. With recent support, ipads and laptops have been purchased for the ward, enabling young patients to keep in touch with their friends and family more regularly.

Congratulations to our runners who took part in the British 10k London run on Sunday 10th July. We are grateful to all of our supporters who took part, both for their commitment to training and to their fundraising achievements. Places will be available for this fantastic run again next year.

Evie Hogg may only be eight years old but she has already run her first mile to raise money for Lungs for Living. Helping scientists detect early lung cancer is of particular importance to Evie as sadly she lost her grandad to a lung cancer related disease last year.

We would like to say thank you to our cyclists who took part in a gruelling 60km ride through the night on Saturday 4th June. Raising more than £1,500 to go towards our work, they set off at 11.30pm and finished at 5.30am just as the sun was rising over Tower Bridge. A huge thank you from us all at UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation.

Dan Burridge is taking on the challenge of a lifetime on Sunday 28th August, running 100k (62.5 miles) in under 24 hours, to raise money for the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre. In April 2015 Dan successfully completed the London Marathon, raising more than £1,500 for the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre in honour of his mother who received treatment at UCLH.

May 2016

Richard Smith, Deputy Trust Security Advisor at UCLH, recently ran the London Marathon. As if completing the marathon was not enough of a challenge, Richard is now running the Vitality 10,000 on 30th May and the British 10k London Run on Sunday 10th July.

Local company NP Group show their support for UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation by taking part in Nightrider, a 60km cycle ride through the night whilst the rest of London sleeps.

On Wednesday 10th February 2016, HRH Princess Anne visited the new Lungs for Living Research Centre, part of UCL Respiratory Research Department, to celebrate the opening of the new laboratories.

At a Reception on Thursday 10th December, Journalist Robert Peston joined UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation to mark the opening of the newly refurbished Lungs for Living Research Centre. More than 45 people attended and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

On Friday 11th December, the Young Person's Unit were visited by a group of staff from the NP Group, carrying sacks of Christmas gifts for the young people who will spend Christmas in hospital.

Young outpatients on T11 often have to stay put for long periods of time whilst having treatment administered which can be quite difficult for them. We are fundraising to purchase entertainment to improve their experience whilst on the ward.

The Thomas Cook Children's Charity has made a generous donation to the Young Person's Unit (T12) at UCH. The donation will enable patients to take part in activities such as creative workshops, baking sessions and pizza and movie nights.

A Lungs for Living Research Centre is being set up to bring a strong team of researchers together in well equipped, modern laboratories. The works are nearing completion and the Lungs for Living Research Centre is due to open at the end of October.

Matt Hogg did a huge amount of fundraising for UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation last year, and is still raising money for Lungs for Living now. On Sunday 11th October Matt is running the Oxford Half Marathon, good luck Matt!

The post, known as the Camilla Nurse, was taken up in April 2013 by Rosie Newth and ran until 2015. Here, Rosie tells us about her post and some of the cancer research she was involved with.

The UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre opened its doors to patients for the first time on 2nd April 2012, offering the most advanced service of its kind in the UK. Five years ago UCLH commissioned Hopkins Architects to design a world class Cancer Centre with uplifting interior atria and gardens that would provide exemplary care for patients and whole family support services.
